A Comparative Study of Mental Health, Life Satisfaction, Individualistic and Collectivistic Culture between two groups of Iranian youth resident in Canada and in Iran
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare mental health, as measured by Goldberg Health Questionnaire (GHQ), and life satisfaction and collectivistic and individualistic culture, as measured by Khosravi Life Satisfaction and Collectivistic/Individualistic Culture Scale, between two groups of Iranian youth, resident in Iran and resident in Canada.
Immigrant participants recruited in person through a non-random sampling method(snowball) and non-immigrant samples matched to them by age, gender, education level and socio-economic situation. Immigrant samples included 71 people (45 women and 27 men) and non-immigrant samples included 72 people (46 women and 26 men), both group ranging from 17 to 34 years of age.
It was hypothesized that mental health, life satisfaction and collectivistic and individualistic culture between immigrants and non-immigrants and also between immigrant men and immigrant women would be different. Findings have revealed that mental health, life satisfaction and collectivistic and individualistic culture between immigrants and non-immigrants are different. Immigrants had higher score in mental health, life satisfaction and collectivistic culture. But no differences have found between immigrant men and immigrant women in these variables.
It was also hypothesized that collectivistic/individualistic culture, life satisfaction, length of residency and immigration reasons would be correlated with mental health of immigrants and also would be the best anticipators for that. Moreover, it was hypothesized that collectivistic/individualistic culture, life satisfaction, socio-economic situation and gender would be correlated with mental health of non-immigrants and also would be the best anticipators for that. The first group has been partially accepted but the second group has been rejected by the present study.
